FAQ

Kite Lesson FAQs

How do I book a lesson?

Contact a REAL Pro by calling 252-987-6000, emailing REALPRO@REALWatersports.com, or filling out our lesson contact form.

Do I need lessons?

Yes. Kiteboarding is technical and kites have a lot of power. Lessons teach you how to control the kite, manage safety, and progress much faster.

If you are already riding, coaching can help with transitions, jumping, ocean riding, foiling, and other next-step skills by breaking them into clear steps with instant feedback.

Do I need to be in great shape to kiteboard?

Kiteboarding is more finesse than strength. You are hooked into the kite with a harness, so it takes very little upper body strength.

Better fitness can help you learn faster, but we teach people of many ages, shapes, and sizes. You should be comfortable in the water and able to swim.

What can I do to prepare for my lessons?

Kiteboarding uses your legs, core, and back. Strength work, yoga, flexibility, and balance training can help you stay fresher during your time with a REAL Coach.

How long does it take to learn to kiteboard?

We generally suggest planning at least three days to get to the point where you can practice safely on your own. Trainer-kite practice and wakeboarding experience can help speed up your progression.

With the REAL coaching program, many students become self-sufficient in about three days, stay upwind around ten days, and start jumping around twenty days. Strong kite and board skills can move that timeline faster.

What can I do to prepare for my first lesson?

Watch the Zero 2 Hero and Evolution instructional videos before your lesson for a preview of the concepts we will cover.

Practicing with a REAL Trainer Kite before your lesson can also help you learn kite control faster.

Yoga, flexibility, balance work, and the REAL Lesson Center Walk-Through are also helpful prep.

Should I take private lessons or Zero to Hero Kite Camp?

Private and semi-private lessons give you the most flexible schedule and a custom curriculum. You can start almost any day of the week and book half-day or full-day sessions.

Zero to Hero is a three-day, two-students-per-coach camp built around a set beginner curriculum: trainer kite, rigging, safety, inflatable kite flying, body dragging, board skills behind a jet ski, water starts, and gear tech.

To choose the best fit, contact a REAL Pro at 252-987-6000, realpro@realwatersports.com, or through our lesson contact form.

Who can join me for a semi-private lesson?

Semi-private students should be similar in weight, within about 50 pounds, and at a similar ability level because you will take turns using the kite.

Semi-private lessons are a fun way to learn with a friend or family member, and watching someone work on similar skills often helps the concepts click faster.

What should I bring?

Bring water wear: booties or water shoes, sunscreen, a bathing suit, and seasonally appropriate wetsuits.

If you need anything, the REAL Flagship Store is stocked with water wear and accessories. REAL students get 10% off regularly priced wetsuits, rashguards, sunscreen, sunglasses, booties, and clothing during lessons. This discount does not apply to gear or accessories such as boards, kites, wings, harnesses, foils, fins, or leashes.

Where are lessons located?

Lessons are based at REAL Watersports in Waves, North Carolina, on the Outer Banks. Cape Hatteras offers world-class conditions for kiteboarding, surfing, and foiling, allowing our coaches to choose the best location for each lesson and the day’s conditions.

What is included with the lesson?

Your lesson includes rental kiteboarding gear, a REAL Coach, and jet ski “On The Fly” coaching for kite lessons.

You will also have access to our Rental Shop, stocked with current gear so we can match the right setup to your lesson and the day’s conditions.

What time should I arrive?

Lessons start daily at 9:30am for the morning session and 2pm for the afternoon session. Please arrive at the REAL Lesson Center 10 minutes before your lesson start time so you can sign your waiver, get booties if needed, meet your coach, and make a plan.

What can I do with my stuff during the lesson?

We have lockers on the back deck that you can rent for valuables, or you can leave your things in your car.

Is there a place for family and friends to watch?

For kite lessons, family and friends can watch part of the lesson from the Watchtower overlooking the sound or from Watermen’s Bar and Grill’s deck overlooking our backyard and the Pamlico Sound.

Because we use a large teaching area and jet skis for lessons, they may not be able to see the entire session.

What if there is no wind?

If there is no wind at the time of your lesson, please still come to the Lesson Center to meet your coach and make a plan. Your coach will work with you to reschedule to the next available time slot.

While waiting for wind, you can often keep progressing with a board ride session, wake foiling, e-foiling, or surfing. Cape Hatteras wind is often better than forecasted and usually not far away.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule my lesson?

You can cancel or reschedule lessons or camps up to 14 days before the scheduled start time with no rescheduling fee.

A $200 rescheduling fee applies to lessons or camps canceled or rescheduled within 14 days, with the remaining balance placed on your REAL account. If REAL cancels your lesson or camp, you will receive a raincheck for the booked value. No rainchecks are issued for cancellations or no-shows within 48 hours of a lesson or camp.

What are the next steps after my lessons?

Your coach will help build a custom plan based on your progress. They can also help you choose the right kiteboarding gear so you can keep practicing.
