Complete Foils

Start with predictable lift at low speed and a setup suited to the activity you are learning. In our on-water review of the Armstrong S1 Alloy Foil Package, we found a low takeoff speed and steady, forgiving handling that helped new riders get comfortable.

Choose the front wing size around your weight, experience and usual conditions. The biggest wing is not automatically the best choice for every rider or session. If you are unsure, ask a REAL Pro to match the foil system to your riding and existing board.

Choose the system around your main activity, then compare the front wing, mast and tail for your experience and conditions. A setup designed for easy starts behind a boat can feel different from one built for kite foiling or carving waves.

For example, the Slingshot One-Lock Wake QuickStart Package uses a 72 cm mast, while the Slingshot One-Lock Kite QuickStart Package uses a different front wing and an 82 cm mast. Some systems support several activities with compatible component changes, but check the intended use of the exact system before choosing a crossover setup.

Aluminum usually offers a lower-cost way into foiling. Carbon can reduce weight and change stiffness and response, but the mast’s design and construction matter as much as the material label. Our aluminum-versus-carbon guide explains the tradeoffs.

Compare the actual components, too. The Armstrong S1 Alloy Foil Package includes a 72 cm alloy mast and 75 cm alloy fuselage. The Armstrong S1 Carbon Foil Package with MKII Masts offers 725, 795 or 865 mm carbon masts with a 70 cm fuselage. Those length differences also affect the setup; this is not a material-only comparison.

A shorter mast keeps you closer to the water and can make learning easier, but leaves less clearance for chop and turns. A longer mast adds clearance while increasing leverage and the height you need to control. Check your riding depth as well as your experience.

Fuselage length changes the feel, too: longer generally adds stability, while shorter allows a more agile response. Choose these parts together with the front and tail wings. Our Anatomy of a Foil guide explains how the components work together.

Check the mast’s board connection, mounting-hole pattern and required hardware against your board’s foil mount. Confirm the correct bolt length and whether the foil system includes the board adapter, track nuts and mounting screws. A shared brand name or a similar-looking mount is not enough to confirm the fit.

For example, the North Sonar MA Prime Foil Edition specifies a 165 × 90 mm mounting pattern and lists foil-to-board screws separately unless supplied with a North board. Send us your board model and the foil system you are considering if you need help checking the connection before ordering.

Tool-less can describe the foil assembly without covering every part of the board connection. In our first-look video on the Slingshot One-Lock Ease Foil Package, the foil’s components connect without tools and the Rapid Track System makes repeated installation quicker after the board mount is set up.

Tools are still needed for the initial track-mount installation and to adjust its position. Check the foil system’s included hardware and assembly instructions so you know what is required for the first session.

Many modular foil systems let you change selected components as your riding develops. Stay within the exact compatible system: front wing, tail, fuselage and mast connections vary by brand and generation, and parts are not universally interchangeable.
