Shop hydrofoil tail wings and stabilizers from Armstrong, AXIS, F-One, Slingshot and more. Choose a tail for the stability, turning and glide you want, and match the connection to your foil system.

Compare compatible front wings and fuselages, or explore all foils for a complete setup. Our foil anatomy guide explains how each part affects the ride.

    Frequently asked questions

What does a hydrofoil tail wing or stabilizer do?

The tail wing is the smaller wing at the back of your foil. It helps control pitch and roll, and changing it can noticeably affect stability, speed and turning. Think of it like changing the fins on a surfboard: a small part can make a big difference to the feel.

Our foil anatomy guide and video explain how it works with the front wing and fuselage. Tail wing, rear wing, back wing and stabilizer are different names for this part.

Is a smaller foil tail wing always better?

No. Smaller tails generally reduce drag and make the foil more responsive, but that can come with less stability. A larger, more forgiving tail can be a better match while you’re learning. Area is only part of the decision: span, shape and fuselage length also change the ride.

Our surf foil progression guide describes downsizing the tail before changing the front wing. The FLUX tail review with Adam Bennetts also shows why numbers alone can mislead: the 125’s camber gives it useful low-speed lift despite its small area. Choose for the feel you want, rather than simply buying the smallest tail.

Which tail wings are good for beginner foilers?

Start with a tail designed for stability and predictable control. The Armstrong S1 300 was developed alongside the S1 front wings as a learning setup. The Slingshot One-Lock Verse 270 emphasizes stability, and the AXIS Freeride range focuses on easy lift and predictable turning.

Those are options within different foil systems, not interchangeable parts. Match your existing setup first. Our One-Lock overview video explains the Ease front wing and Verse 270 pairing for riders who want a stable starting point.

How do Armstrong Flow, Surf, Glide, Speed and Dart tails compare?

The Flow 235 is the smooth, predictable all-around option. The Surf 205 emphasizes tight turns, while the Surf MKII was developed alongside the MA MKII front wings for control and carving across a broad speed range.

The Glide 220 focuses on pump and glide for light-wind winging and downwinding. The Speed 180 is a performance option for experienced riders, while the smaller Dart tails offer a more reactive, low-drag feel for advanced riders. Our Flow 235 and Surf 205 review explains their turning and stability differences.

What do the numbers on AXIS rear wings mean?

On a tail such as the AXIS Skinny 360/45, 360 is the wingspan in millimeters and 45 is the maximum chord, or front-to-back width. It does not mean 360 cm² of area; that model’s listed area is 135.94 cm².

The Skinny range uses changes in chord to tune drag and feel. Its product guidance steers heavier or less experienced riders toward the wider-chord options, with narrower options for riders seeking less drag. Compare the actual specifications and model guidance rather than treating the first number as an area measurement.

Which tail wings should I compare for pumping and glide?

Look at tails designed for that job. The Armstrong Pump 202 was designed specifically for the APF front wings. The Glide 220 targets efficient pump and glide for light-wind winging and downwinding. The AXIS Pump 460/60 V2 is another pump-focused option within the AXIS system.

Choose the tail for your front wing, skill level and main use. A tail aimed at long-distance glide will not necessarily give you the tightest surf turns. The model descriptions explain those priorities and the intended pairings, so compare the whole setup before choosing.

Will a replacement tail wing fit my existing foil?

Check the exact system and connection before ordering. The Armstrong A+ tail-wing range is listed for both the Armstrong A+ Carbon and Alloy systems. Slingshot One-Lock tails are for the One-Lock system. A shared brand name alone is not enough to establish a fit.

Also separate tail compatibility from mast compatibility. In our F-One SK8 V3/TITAN 2 review, the new mast connection changes while tail compatibility carries over. That is a specific F-One generation change, not a rule for every foil. Check the model’s pairing information or ask us with the exact parts you have.

How do F-One Monobloc Carving, Pumping and DW tails compare?

F-One’s Monobloc construction reduces connections for a streamlined, stiff setup. The F-One Monobloc tail range includes Carving, Pumping and DW options for different riding priorities.

Carving emphasizes speed, maneuverability and a looser feel. Pumping is designed for dock starts and sustained pumping, while DW focuses on downwind glide and forward projection. Use the front-wing and tail pairing chart on the product page to narrow down the options for your front-wing model and size, then consider your riding level and discipline.

What do foil tail-wing shims do?

A tail shim changes the angle of the stabilizer. That can change the balance of lift, stability and speed you feel through the board. It is a tuning adjustment, not a substitute for choosing a compatible tail.

Our Flow 235 and Surf 205 review explains how Matt uses shims with the A+ fuselage to change the ride. Follow the baseline and shim guidance for your exact tail and system; the same shim number or direction should not be assumed to have the same effect across brands. If you’re unsure which setup you have, ask us before changing it.

Do tail wings come with covers, screws and shims?

Package contents vary by model. The Armstrong A+ tail-wing page lists a padded cover, polycarbonate shims and hardware. The F-One Monobloc tail lists a cover and assembly screws. The AXIS Skinny rear wing includes a cover, with hardware sold separately.

Check the package list for the tail you’re ordering and use the correct hardware for its connection. Add foil hardware only when it is needed; included parts differ between systems.
