Foiling Lesson FAQs

How do I book a lesson?

Contact a REAL Pro by calling 252-987-6000, emailing REALPRO@REALWatersports.com, or filling out our lesson contact form. Wing Foil 101, Parawing 101, and Zero to Hero Wing Foil Camp can also be booked online from their cards above.

Do I need lessons?

Yes. Foiling is technical, and lessons help you learn efficiently and safely. If you already foil, coaching can advance wing transitions, surf foil, ocean riding, Foil Drive, parawing, or kite foil through clear steps and immediate feedback.

Do I need to be in great shape to foil?

Foiling is more finesse than strength, but poor technique can be tiring. Fitness helps, and you should be comfortable swimming and climbing back onto the board. We teach people of many ages, shapes, and sizes.

What can I do to prepare for my lessons?

Leg, core, back, flexibility, and balance work all help. The REAL Lesson Center Walk-Through also gives you a preview of the lesson experience.

How long does it take to learn to foil?

Plan at least three days to build a foundation for safe independent practice. Typical wing progression is roughly three days to self-sufficient sessions, around ten days to stay upwind, and about twenty days for transitions or waves. Strong wind, board, and balance skills can accelerate that path.

Should I take private lessons, semi-private lessons, or camp?

Private lessons provide one-on-one coaching and the most customization. Semi-private lessons work well for two matched students. Zero to Hero Wing Foil Camp is a three-day, two-students-per-coach beginner program that builds a complete foundation.

Who can join me for a semi-private lesson?

Your partner should be within about 40 pounds and at a similar ability level. Sharing a lesson can be fun and effective because you learn by watching someone work on similar skills.

What should I bring?

Bring water, sunglasses, booties or thin water shoes, sunscreen, a bathing suit, and seasonally appropriate water wear. Kneepads are required for wing lessons and camps below advanced level.

REAL students receive 10% off regularly priced wetsuits, rash guards, sunscreen, sunglasses, booties, and clothing during lessons. The discount does not apply to boards, foils, wings, kites, harnesses, leashes, or other gear.

What is included with the lesson?

Lessons include the appropriate rental foil equipment, a REAL Coach, and Jet Ski “On The Fly” coaching for most water-based sessions. The Rental Shop carries wings from 2.5m to 8m plus boards, foils, eFoils, Foil Drive, and specialty gear so your coach can match the setup to the conditions and let you try equipment you may be considering.

Where are lessons located?

Lessons are based at REAL Watersports in Waves, North Carolina, on the Outer Banks. Cape Hatteras offers world-class conditions for kiteboarding, surfing, and foiling, allowing our coaches to choose the best location for each lesson and the day’s conditions.

What time should I arrive?

Lessons start daily at 9:30am for the morning session and 2pm for the afternoon session. Arrive 10 minutes early to sign your waiver, get ready, meet your coach, and make a plan.

What can I do with my stuff during the lesson?

Rental lockers are available on the back deck for valuables, or you can leave your belongings in your car.

Is there a place for family and friends to watch?

Family and friends can watch part of many lessons from the Watchtower overlooking the sound or from Watermen’s Bar and Grill’s deck. Because lessons use a large teaching area and Jet Skis, they may not see the entire session.

What if there is no wind or waves?

Still come to the Lesson Center to meet your coach and make a plan. Your coach can reschedule or, when appropriate, keep you progressing through board skills, wing control, eFoil, surf foil, or another conditions-friendly session.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule my lesson?

Changes are free at least 14 days before the start. Inside 14 days, current product terms charge $30 per student for Wing Foil 101 or Parawing 101 and $200 for Zero to Hero Wing Foil Camp; current private and semi-private FAQ terms also state $200. Confirm specialty and Offsite terms with a REAL Pro when booking. Payment is due in full.

No rainchecks are issued for cancellations or no-shows within 48 hours, and no-shows forfeit the booked value. Group classes cannot be delayed for late arrivals; late camp time is deducted. When conditions prevent REAL from completing a booked program, unused value is placed on a non-expiring REAL account credit under the applicable terms.

Can I learn kite foil at REAL?

Yes, but Kite Foil is a specialty option for confident kiteboarders who can already stay upwind. Most new foil students are better served by Wing Foil, eFoil, Surf Foil, or Board Skills coaching first.

What are the next steps after my lessons?

Your coach will make a custom plan based on your progress and can help you choose the right foiling equipment so you can keep practicing. The REAL Rental Shop’s Try Before You Buy program lets you apply one rental day toward a qualifying purchase.
