Zero to Hero Camp Kiteboarding

A 10/10 Experience

I did the zero to hero kiteboarding camp and it seriously was a 10/10 experience. … Would recommend to anyone wanting to get into the sport but doesn't know where to start.

FAQ

Lesson Center FAQs

Booking, preparation, weather, gear, and what to expect before you arrive.

How do I book a lesson?

Contact a REAL Pro by calling 252-987-6000, emailing REALPRO@REALWatersports.com, or filling out our lesson contact form.

Do I need lessons?

Yes. Kiteboarding, surfing, winging, and foiling are conditions-based sports. Lessons help you understand the gear, the water, and the safety side of your sport so you can progress faster and have more fun.

If you already ride, coaching can help you build confidence, clean up technique, and work toward the next skill without guessing your way through it.

Do I need to be in great shape?

You should be comfortable in the water and able to swim. Better fitness can help you learn faster and stay fresher, but REAL has taught people of many ages, shapes, and sizes.

Most lessons are more about good technique, balance, timing, and reading conditions than pure strength.

What can I do to prepare for my lesson?

Arrive rested, hydrated, and ready to spend time in the water. Core, leg, back, and flexibility work can help for any lesson, and a good meal before your session goes a long way.

If you are taking a beginner lesson, reviewing the sport-specific prep materials on that lesson page can help you show up with the basic concepts already in your head.

How long does it take to learn?

It depends on the sport, conditions, your goals, and your previous water or board-sports experience. Some students get a big breakthrough in one session, while others benefit from planning a few days of coaching.

In general, more time with a REAL Coach helps you move farther up the learning curve and gives you a clearer plan for practicing safely on your own.

Should I book Private, Semi-Private, or a camp?

Private and Semi-Private Lessons are the most flexible. They let you start on more days of the week, learn at your own pace, and customize the session around your goals.

Camps are better when you want a more structured, multi-day beginner curriculum. Availability, schedule, age ranges, and curriculum vary by sport, so check the specific kiteboarding, surfing, winging, or foiling lesson page for the details.

To choose the best option, contact a REAL Pro at 252-987-6000, realpro@realwatersports.com, or through the lesson contact form.

Who can join me for a Semi-Private Lesson?

Semi-Private Lessons are best for friends or family members with similar goals, ability levels, and, for some sports, similar size or weight. This helps your coach keep the session moving and choose the right gear and plan for everyone.

They are also a fun way to share the experience. Watching someone work on similar skills while talking with the coach can make the lesson click faster.

What should I bring?

Students are required to bring their own water wear. Bring sunscreen, a standard bathing suit, a water bottle, and seasonally appropriate wetsuits or layers. Some lessons may also require watershoes or booties.

If you need anything, the REAL Flagship Store is stocked with water wear and accessories so you can be comfortable on and off the water.

What is included with a lesson?

Lessons include the sport-specific gear needed for your session and a REAL Coach. Depending on the sport and lesson format, your session may also include support equipment such as a jet ski, access to the REAL Rental Shop, or transportation to the lesson location.

Your coach will help match the gear and plan to the conditions, your ability level, and your goals for the day.

Where are lessons located?

Lessons are based at REAL Watersports in Waves, North Carolina, on the Outer Banks. Cape Hatteras offers world-class conditions for kiteboarding, surfing, and foiling, allowing our coaches to choose the best location for each lesson and the day’s conditions.

What is included with a camp?

REAL camps include the gear needed for the camp and a REAL Coach or coaches. Some camps may include snacks or other sport-specific details, so check the individual camp page for the exact schedule, age range, and what to bring.

What time should I arrive?

Plan to arrive 15 to 30 minutes before your scheduled lesson or camp start time. This gives you time to sign a waiver, get any accessories you need, meet your coach, and make a plan for the session.

Some camps or offsite lessons may have a specific meeting place or arrival window, so check your booking details before you come in.

What can I do with my stuff during the lesson?

Lockers are available on the back deck for valuables, or you can leave your things in your vehicle. For beach-based lessons or camps, your coach can help point you toward the best place to keep non-valuable items during the session.

Is there a place for family and friends to watch?

Often, yes. Viewing depends on the sport, conditions, and lesson location. Some sessions can be watched from the beach, the Watchtower, or Watermen’s Bar and Grill’s deck, while others use a larger teaching area where family and friends may only see part of the lesson.

What happens if the conditions are not right?

Come to the Lesson Center to meet your coach and make a plan for the day. If the wind, waves, or water conditions are not right for your scheduled lesson, your coach will work with you on the next best option.

Depending on the day, that may mean rescheduling to the next available time slot or choosing another productive way to keep progressing on the water.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule my lesson?

You can cancel or reschedule lessons or camps up to 14 days before the scheduled lesson or camp time with no reschedule fees. A $200 rescheduling fee applies to any lessons or camps canceled or rescheduled within 14 days of the scheduled lesson or camp start time, and the remaining balance will be placed on your REAL account.

If REAL cancels your lesson or camp, you will receive a raincheck equivalent to the value of the lesson or camp booked. No rainchecks will be issued for cancellations or no-shows within 48 hours of a lesson or camp.

What are the next steps after my lesson?

Your coach will help make a customized plan based on your progress during the lesson. They can also help you choose the right gear, next lesson, or practice plan so you can keep improving after your session.
