Choose around your main sport, your weight and your experience, then consider the other foiling sports you want to try. Look for a system with suitable wings now and useful upgrade options. A setup for learning to wing and one for powered kite foiling can need very different front wings, even when they share a mast and fuselage.

Our first-foil buying guide explains how to narrow the choice. Compare foil packages as complete hydrofoil assemblies, and ask us to check the sizes and connections before you buy.

Check the exact Package Includes list. A hydrofoil package can include the mast, fuselage, front wing, tail and assembly hardware without a board or inflatable wing. The Armstrong S1 Alloy Foil Package, for example, lists those foil components, a top plate, covers, tools and a bag; it does not list a foilboard.

If you also need a board, compare complete foiling packages. Check the selected configuration for any inflatable wing, leashes and board-mounting hardware rather than assuming everything pictured is included.

Prioritize predictable lift, low-speed control and stability. In our Armstrong S1 review videos, our coaches explain how its low takeoff speed and straight tracking help students get longer, more repeatable rides. It also gives progressing riders a forgiving platform for practicing maneuvers.

Choose the size for your weight, sport and usual conditions. Our surf foil progression guide shows why a learning setup should make starts manageable. The biggest wing available is not automatically the right choice for every rider.

A well-designed aluminum setup can be a good starting point. In our S1 Alloy review, Matt compares Armstrong's alloy rig with its Performance carbon mast and carbon fuselage. He finds the carbon setup smoother and faster, while the alloy rig offers a capable ride at a lower price.

That is a comparison of those specific setups, not a promise about every carbon or aluminum mast. Compare the actual mast design, length and system compatibility, and leave room in your budget for suitable wings and a board.

Only when the exact connections are confirmed compatible. Check the mast-to-fuselage connection, wing and tail fittings, and the mast's board mount. A shared brand name is not enough.

For example, the F-One SK8 V3 T2 uses TITAN 2; its product information says that connection is not backward compatible with 2025 and older F-One foils and masts. Before buying replacement parts, ask us to check your existing system and the exact component you want to add.

Choose the ride you want, then compare specific models. In our Armstrong MA MKII wind-sports review, Matt and Brandon favor the MA's controlled carving, pitch stability and broad speed range in powered conditions. They give up some pump and glide compared with the HA, and still choose HA wings for lighter wind.

That makes the MA MKII and HA useful for different sessions. More aspect ratio is not automatically better, and equal wing area does not guarantee an equivalent ride. Compare the intended use of each front wing before choosing a size.

Choose around your local depth, conditions and confidence on foil. A shorter mast keeps you closer to the surface but leaves less clearance through chop. A longer mast gives more room above waves and bumps, with more leverage to control.

Yes, when your system has compatible options. Start with what you want to change: easier pumping, tighter turns, more speed or a steadier ride. Our surf foil progression guide describes changing the tail before moving to a smaller front wing or a mid-aspect design.

A smaller tail wing can add response, while a shorter fuselage generally makes turns quicker and reduces stability. Our foil anatomy guide covers the effect of each part. Check compatibility first and choose the change that solves your actual riding problem.
