What We Like:
The Skipper is an amazing soft top shortboard. Most people write off the performance of this board because it's a soft top, but we are here to tell you that this bad boy can rip. It surfs really well. The shape was designed by a human that knows how to shape rather than some cookie cutter pop out. There is the right blend of outline shape to rocker to give you glide for paddling and speed down the line when you stand up.
Kids love the Skipper. They love the name, the look, and the soft top safety. We see all the groms attach to the 5'6 since it is not a huge soft top. They can carry it to the water and handle it on their own. You will see your kids taking it out on their own. When it gets away and smashes into one of them, they come up laughing.
As far as groveler surfboards go, the Skipper is an awesome option. It's so thick and floaty for the size so they catch everything that comes at you. It carries speed down the line and the triple stringers make it stiff enough to pump and generate speed or turn.
The Skipper comes in three sizes. The 5'6" is the best board we found for teaching small kids to surf (<85lbs.) The 6'0" is best for beginners in the 65-120lbs size and the 6'6" works for an entry level shortboard for adults or bigger kids.
The fin system is propriety but classic FCS two tab fins can work in these fin boxes in a pinch. The stock fins are good plastic fins that will hold up to many sessions grinding up on the beach and getting pounded on by kids. For the advanced rider, the quad fin set up was quick and looser.
We tried kiting the Skipper a few times. The smallest size of 5'6 was the best one and it worked pretty well for light winds and small waves. If you want a cheap kitesurf board that you and your kids can surf, you might consider the Skipper.
Why you want the Skipper:
If you want your kids to surf, make the investment and buy them a Skipper. The board will last, take a beating and most importantly get your kids stoked on surfing.
The Catch Surf Skipper is an awesome surfboard, and it is the #1 choice at REAL for kids. Pick the size and color to suit your style and prepare for some extra stoked sessions.
