What We Like:
The Plank surfs really well and not just really well for a standard soft top. It's actually a great board to surf. There is a big flat section in the middle that gives you tons of glide and makes it have a huge sweet spot. You can catch waves so easily on this board.
There is enough nose rocker, so you don't pearl if you are a beginner. The tail is pulled in enough and rounded that it turns way better than expected.
They put in an actual fin box, so you can upgrade your Plank. We found that the stock plastic fin was the right size and worked great in the board. If you break this fin or wanted a different design, and standard longboard fin will work.
Most soft top boards feel like they have an anchor hanging out the back. That is not the case with the Plank as we found it to have good acceleration on the wave, and it will glide and carry speed through the flat spots.
There is no question that this is the ultimate board for learning to surf. When you paddle into a wave, you get up to speed and catch up to the wave speed quickly. This gives beginner more time to stand up and get down the line.
The increased rocker in the nose makes nose riding difficult. Most people are using the Plank as a beginner board so it does not matter that much.
The Plank comes in 7', 8' and 9' options. These boards are really thick and floaty so you can size down a bit. The 9' is a tank and kind of heavy, so you want to have someone over 170lbs riding this one. The 8' is the ultimate learning board for most people 120lbs-180lbs. The 7' is best for people 150lbs or smaller.
Why you want the Catch Surf Plank:
Most people buy this board for their family and kids to learn on. We did the same and ended up surfing the Plank a ton since it surfs so well. The security of the soft top takes the fear factor out of the way too.
The Plank is the best beginner surfboard on the market because it has a ton of glide, surfs really well, is durable and looks cool.
