Jeff and his team of surf camp counselors were a very energetic, supportive, positive and knowledgeable group! His friend was a first-time surfer and a bit nervous in the beginning. By the end of the three days he was also catching waves!

FAQ

Surf Lesson FAQs

How do I book a lesson?

Contact a REAL Pro by calling 252-987-6000, emailing REALPRO@REALWatersports.com, or filling out our lesson contact form. Surfing 101, Surfing 201, and Zero to Hero Surf Camp can also be booked online from their cards above.

Do I need lessons?

Yes. Surfing is technical, and the ocean deserves respect. Lessons help you understand waves, choose the right equipment, learn safer habits, and progress much faster.

If you already surf, coaching can help with riding down the line, turns, positioning, and wave selection.

Do I need to be in great shape to surf?

You do not need to be in perfect shape, but you should be comfortable in the water and able to swim. Surfing uses balance, timing, and flow. Better fitness can help, but we teach people of many ages, shapes, and ability levels.

What can I do to prepare for my lessons?

Surfing uses your legs, core, back, and shoulders. Yoga, flexibility work, and general strength training can help. Balance-board, skateboarding, and snowboarding experience can also accelerate learning.

How long does it take to learn to surf?

Most students get up and riding during their first lesson. Plan at least three days for a stronger foundation and safer independent practice. Many students become self-sufficient in about three days; going down the line and making turns often takes around ten days, depending on water and board skills.

What can I do to prepare for my first lesson?

Hydrate the day before, eat a solid meal, and practice pop-ups if you can. Mark two spots on the floor about two to three feet apart, then pop up from lying down and land your feet on those marks.

Should I take Private Lessons or sign up for a REAL Surf Camp?

Private and Semi-Private Lessons are best for custom coaching, flexible start days, and a plan built around your pace and goals. A private coach can cover the same beginner progression used in camp.

Zero to Hero Surf Camp is a three-day beginner program for ages 8–17 with three surfers per coach. Contact a REAL Pro if you would like help choosing.

Who can join me for a Semi-Private Lesson?

Semi-Private Lessons are for groups of two or more students, with a maximum of three students per coach. They are a great fit for friends and family because each surfer gets equipment matched to their size and ability while sharing the experience.

What should I bring?

Bring sunscreen, a bathing suit or seasonally appropriate wetsuit, and a water bottle. REAL students receive 10% off regularly priced wetsuits, rash guards, sunscreen, sunglasses, and clothing during lessons. The discount does not apply to boards, fins, leashes, or other gear accessories.

Where are lessons located?

Lessons are based at REAL Watersports in Waves, North Carolina, on the Outer Banks. Cape Hatteras offers world-class conditions for kiteboarding, surfing, and foiling, allowing our coaches to choose the best location for each lesson and the day’s conditions.

What is included with the lesson?

Surf lessons include the surf gear needed for your session, a REAL Coach, and transportation to and from the lesson location. Intermediate and advanced lessons may also use premium quiver boards, giving you a chance to try equipment you may be considering.

What is included with a REAL Surf Camp?

Camp includes REAL Coaches, surfboards, three days of instruction, snacks, photos, and videos. Students with specific dietary needs should bring their own snacks.

The curriculum covers safety, wave dynamics, paddling, wave selection, etiquette, down-the-line riding, turns, positioning, and gear knowledge.

What time should I arrive?

Lessons start daily at 9:30am for the morning session and 2pm for the afternoon session. Arrive at the REAL Lesson Center 10 minutes early to sign a waiver, get ready, meet your coach, and make a plan.

What can I do with my stuff during the lesson?

Rental lockers are available on the back deck for valuables, or you can leave your belongings in your car or truck.

Is there a place for family and friends to watch?

Yes. Family and friends are encouraged to watch from the beach.

What if there is no surf or too much surf?

REAL Surf Lessons include 4x4 transportation so coaches can seek the best break for the day. They may move south to Frisco or north to Coquina Beach before discussing rescheduling. If conditions are not workable anywhere appropriate, your coach will make a new plan with you.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule my lesson?

Cancellation terms vary by program. Changes are free at least 14 days before the start. Inside 14 days, current terms charge $30 per student for Surfing 101 or 201 and $200 for Zero to Hero Surf Camp, Private Lessons, or Semi-Private Lessons. Remaining value is placed on the student’s REAL account, subject to the booked program’s terms. Custom Guide and Offsite terms are confirmed when booking.

No rainchecks are issued for cancellations or no-shows within 48 hours, and no-shows forfeit the booked value. Group classes cannot be delayed for late arrivals; late camp time is deducted from camp time. If conditions force REAL to cancel, the applicable program credit or raincheck policy applies.

What are the next steps after my lessons?

Your coach will create a customized plan based on your progress and can help you choose the right surfboard so you can keep practicing after your lesson.
