Information About Chicama
The World's Longest Left!
Chicama is the longest left-hand point break in the world, located in northwestern Peru's La Libertad Region, north of Trujillo. The wave stretches 2.5 miles from the farthest take-off spot to near the fishing pier. It is exposed to swells from S 180 to NW 315 degrees, with SW swells being optimal. This swell energy bends around the tip of the rocks, providing long, clean waves ideal for foiling and surfing.
La Punta is the furthest spot up the point and the main take-off spot for foiling. The Point is the most famous part of Chicama. The wave is well-shaped, fast, and breaking over sand. The scene is surreal with moonscape backdrops and friendly locals, offering a place of pure power and raw energy.
Weather
Expect temperatures between 60-80°F during the Peruvian fall. Mornings are cooler (60-70°F), warming mid-day (75-85°F), and cooling in the evenings (60-65°F). Winds are lighter in the morning, building to 20+mph in the afternoon. Winds start in an offshore direction and bend side-offshore. Chicama's coastal desert receives minimal rainfall.

Suggested Surf Gear
What gear should you bring for surfing Chicama?
Considerations for Surfers
- Wave Conditions: March offers consistent swells with wave heights typically ranging from 3 to 6 feet, ideal for intermediate and advanced surfers.
- Wind: Offshore winds are most consistent in the mornings, providing clean waves. Afternoons can bring stronger winds, so early sessions are recommended.
- Skill Level: Chicama's long, smooth waves are perfect for intermediate and advanced surfers looking to enjoy lengthy rides and improve their skills.
Surfboards
- The wave at Chicama prefers longer railed boards with flatter rocker. This helps with down the line speed and connecting sections for max length of ride; sometimes over a mile. In general, we recommend bringing the board you ride at home and are familiar with. Your second board should be higher volume to add extra waves when you're gassed after miles of surfing the world's longest left.
- Board bags with adequate padding for travel protection.
Wetsuit
- A 3/2mm wetsuit is typically sufficient for the water temperatures in Chicama.
- Optional: Spring suit or Short Sleeve Full
- A second, dry suit is great for multiple sessions per day
Additional Gear
- Leashes - At least two leashes, one standard, one comp
- Wax - Cool & warm water wax
- Fins - Extra sets of fins and a fin key.
- Repair Kit - Ding repair kit for quick fixes. Surfboard repair service available.
Suggested Foil Gear
What Foil, Foil Drive, and Wing foiling gear should you bring for Chicama?
Considerations for Foilers
- Wave Conditions: March offers consistent swells with wave heights typically ranging from 3 to 6 feet, ideal for intermediate and advanced foilers.
- Wind: Winds blow offshore in the mornings, providing clean waves. Afternoon can bring stronger winds trending more side shore.
- Skill Level: Chicama's long, smooth waves are perfect for intermediate and advanced foilers looking to enjoy lengthy rides and improve their skills.
Inflatable Wings
- Suggested wing sizes are 4m to 6m, depending on wind conditions.
Foils
- Medium to high-aspect foils prioritize efficiency and glide to maximize long rides. A foil with good pumping ability will help you connect sections.
- Front Wing Sizing depends on your weight and skill level. We strongly recommend bringing at least one front wing in the 490-690 range. This allows you to fully enjoy high-speed rides of up to 8 minutes without fighting to keep your front wing in the water. Larger wings can work for smaller waves or easier takeoff while smaller wings offer additional performance.
- A 725-935mm mast is ideal for handling the long, open faces and fast, powerful waves of the Pacific.
Wing Foiling, Foil Drive, and Tow Boards
You'll want to bring two foil boards. One for wing foiling and one for tow foiling. In our experience, we have seen very few prone sessions.
- Wing Foiling Board- A stable and maneuverable wing foil board that handles well in long, clean waves. A mid-length is easiest to travel with and handles a variety of conditions.
- Tow Board- We recommend packing a specific board for tow foiling. It's best to have a board in the 12 - 28L range.
- Foil Drive Board- A board specifically designed and set up for Foil Drive is best in addition to your tow and wing board.
Foil Drive
- Foil Drive Assist MAX is the flagship model with maximum power, runtime, thrust and versatility. Perfect for the long waves of Chicama.
- Foil Drive Max Travel Battery - allows you to travel with your gear! The MAX Travel Battery breaks down into three smaller sections for approved airline travel with 2 parts being 129.6wh and one part at 97.2wh.
- You must bring your charger. You can charge using standard US 120 V electrical plugs; no adapter needed.
Additional Gear
- Leashes- A coiled leash for the board and a waist leash for the wing to ensure safety, ability to paddle and convenience.
- Pump- High-quality pump
- Protective Gear- Helmet & impact vest
- Wetsuit- A 3/2mm wetsuit is typically sufficient for the water temperatures in Chicama. Optional: Spring suit or Short Sleeve Full
- Accessories- Small compact tool, foot straps and backup hardware

Chicama 2026“REAL Chicama 2026 was an incredible, bucket list trip. The wave met and actually exceeded all expectations. The REAL Staff made the trip special and they took care of the kind of details that can make the difference between a successful trip and one that might not meet expectations. I will be there again and I will book it through REAL even though the option is available to try and fly solo. Thank you for the trip of a lifetime!”
