REAL Review

The Ocean Rodeo Aluula Roam is the lightest free ride kite on the market. This kite uses the new aged Aluula material in place of the Dacron for the struts and leading edge. This new materials make this kite 1-3 pounds lighter than any comparable products on the market. The Roam is a three strut wave kite that works great for waves, kite foiling and free ride kiteboarding.

What We Like
  • This kite flies better than most. When you put the kite in the air for the first time, you know it works. It doesn’t matter the wind conditions, the Aluula Roam kite will fly really well.
  • You feel the light weight when you fly the Roam. It feels really sporty and totally balanced.
  • Overhead stability is unmatched. In really light wind, the kite stays over head and keeps flying. In gusty over powered conditions it stays parked in the sky. You can let go of the bar anywhere in the wind window and the kite hangs out there with out stalling.
  • The power band on this kite is very gradual. Easy power on and easy power off.
  • Quick and responsive turning for waves. No dead spots in the turns. Even if you turn the kite low in the window, it keeps moving and doesn’t stall.
  • Upwind performance is much better than most kites in this category.
  • Excellent drift for down the line wave riding.
  • We loved this kite for underpowered kite foiling. The smooth power delivery makes it really well suited for the foil.
  • Even our entry level riders all loved riding the Aluula Roam. Everyone at REAL has been fighting over the demo.
What We Don't Like
  • This kite is expensive. Buying new space aged materials isn’t cheap, but the performance of the kite is so good that it is worth it.
  • The Roam isn’t a power house. Like most wave kites, this kite doesn’t have much low end power. It does handle underpowered and over powered conditions really well but it doesn’t have much low end grunt.
  • This kite is marketed as a wave kite but works so well as a foil and free ride kite that we think some people might steer away from it because they don’t ride waves.
  • Some of our testers didn’t like the twist depower bar. It felt a little big and clunky. Any four line bar will work on this kite so you can mix and match bars with the Roam if you want to.
Who is the Ocean Rodeo Aluula Roam for?
  • If you kite foil and ride waves, the Aluula Roam is the way to go. This kite is the dawn of a new age of high end materials that clearly are superior to what we have been riding on for the last 20 years of kiteboarding.

Description

From Ocean Rodeo
ROAM FREERIDE FOIL BOARD / WAVE The ALUULA A-Series Roam is simply a dream come true for freeride foilers and committed wave riders. This 3-strut kite with an ultra-light and strong ALUULA air frame allows for precise sheeting control, snappy turns and on-demand kite positioning in light winds. And should the wind pick up, the stiffness of the air frame means that the kite's stability and precision control is retained. For freeride foiling, kite transitions on the A-Series Roam are achievable in the lightest of breezes, and with the deep, low aspect design coupled with the light ALUULA air frame, the Roam will not luff or stall, even in complete slack-line situations. Unpredictable wind states and formerly unmakeable sections all become opportunities for the rider: the playing field is fully opened up by riding the A-Series Roam. Sizes: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12 Weights: 10m – 4.4 lb / 1.9 kg 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12m – TBA

Aluula? More like Oh La La

Probably my favorite kite to foil with. It stays up in the air like no other kite on the market and it honestly feels like its full of helium. The three struts help keep its form when on the water - making it super easy to relaunch in light wind. I have also found that one size of this kite works in a large range of wind as it some how generates power on the lightest of wind days.

Every time I get the opportunity to use this kite I know I'm in for a good session. I'm stoked to see what Ocean Rodeo will do with this kite in the future because it is already so good!

May be the best foiling kite

Flying this kite on foil was a fantastic experience. Its hard to explain, but this kite both produces less power and more power than all of the other foil kites I have tested. When you sheet out it feels like the kite isn't there and when you want to jump, this kite produces more power than the Xlite / Boxer / Alpha etc. It is a very predictable and user friendly 3 strut foiling masterpiece.

Too Good to be True?

By the numbers, the Roam Aluula 10m is 1-3 pounds lighter than most kites in this category. The only 10m that came close was the Ozone Alpha which was .5 lbs more than the Aluula Roam and it is a single strut kite.

At first glance I noticed that the leading edge and strut diameters are tiny compared to most competitors. That is one way to drop some weight. The shape and wing tip of this kite reminded me of an Ozone Reo. Plenty of arc in the kite, full wing tip and not too deep of a draft. The Aluula material is shiny and almost plasticy looking. The canopy is standard rip stop. Overall it looked like most kites with a shinny material and skinny struts and leading edge that did't feel extra stiff when you folded the kite over.

One the water performance is really impressive. I tested this kite in the waves, on foil and in the flat water. You can tell when you launch the Roam that it is incredibly stable over head. You have a lighter bar feel but still know where the kite is at all times. The turn is snappy, quick and responsive. There are NO dead spots in the turns. This is really rare, where most kites will stall at some point in the window. When you take tension off the lines, the Aluula Roam just drifts and stays put.

The Aluula Roam is a SICK kite. It flies under and over powered really well. It doesn't have a lot of low end grunt but the range is really big. Performance is on point too. Not sure if it is the material or not, but this kite rocks.
