Watch | Under the Glass with Brett Barley, presented by Surfline and REAL
REAL and Surfline have teamed up to produce “Under The Glass”, a six episode series documenting Brett Barley’s transition from riding for SUPERbrand for over ten years, to being able to surf anything that REAL Watersports carries in their 1,500 board inventory. The ultimate free agent.
The season one finale of Under the Glass covers “Five Lessons Learned” during the course of Brett going free agent and riding any board in REAL’s 1,500 surfboard inventory.Brett shares what he thought before, and how five new boards changed the way he thinks now about surfboards and building out his quiver.Trip dives into boiling down your choices, how sometimes that magic boards comes by surprise, and how dimensions and volume can miss the point when accurately describing a surfboard design.
The AJW OG Potato Launcher is right up Brett’s alley, designed as a shorter length, barrel board for chest high to overhead waves.
What’s not the norm for Brett is committing to a quad in boards of this length, as he’s typically a “thruster guy”. Brett tells us why he loves this board so much, even with his quad fins installed backwards, while Trip digs into Brett’s new found love of quads and asks “Will this be in your next Namibia quiver?” Video and edit by Jeffrey Oneill and Cody Hammer.
The Pyzel Ghost Pro was the very first board Brett picked off the rack at REAL after going free agent.
Once the waves turned on, this board lit up and exceeded expectations, which is saying something since there’s a lot of Ghost hype out there already.Brett dives deep into the difference between a barrel board vs. a step up, while Trip shows viewers that where the volume is can be more important than the number itself. Video and edit by Jeffrey O’Neil and Cody Hammer.
You asked for it, well here it is! Episode #3 dives into reality, with small waves and alternative craft.Brett breaks down the AJW Classic Twin and why it became his go to summer board of choice.Trip asks the question, “Why did Adam call this board the Classic Twin, when it’s anything but classic?” Video and edit by Jeffrey O’Neil.
Episode #2 “steps it down” from the …Lost Driver to the …Lost Sub Driver, again in EPS/Epoxy Light Speed Construction.Brett shares his impressions on the board, as well as the performance characteristics he’s looking for in smaller/softer waves.Trip digs into why surfers are trending more towards epoxy based constructions in the pool, and how keeping some variables consistent is the best way to test new boards. Video and edit by Jeffrey O’Neil. Additional footage provided by Patrick Duggan and Shawn Deane.
Episode #1 pulls straight into it, covering Brett’s sessions on the …Lost Surfboards Driver 2.0 built in EPS/Epoxy “Light Speed” construction. REAL’s Trip Forman co-hosts the show and breaks down construction and performance in a way every day surfers can understand. Video and edit by Jeffrey O’Neil.A new episode of “Under The Glass” will release every Friday through November 18th.
