How to Choose Twinzer Fins with True Ames
With so many Twinzer surfboard models hitting the shop right now, Trip Forman welcomes Gabe Macon from True Ames Fins to the REAL Board Loft to get all the info on the best way to fin these boards.
In this video:
Fin Theory and Cant Angle: Trip and Gabe delve into cant angle, which is how far the fin is splayed out. Twinzer setups typically have a greater cant angle in the canard fin compared to the rear fin. True Ames offers fins with different cant angles (0, 4, and 9 degrees) to allow surfers to dial in their boards
Matching Fins with Plugs: We highlight that a zero-degree plug (straight into the board) would ideally be paired with a 9-degree fin plug to create a 9-degree angle, while a 6-degree plug might use a 4-degree canard fin for a total of 10 degrees.
Performance and Feel:
• Adding more cant to the canards provides more bite to the fin.
• A common mistake is having too little cant, which makes the board feel stiff and difficult to lean over on rail.
• Unlike a split keel, a twinzer is more about manipulating water flow over the rear fin, leading to a higher performance level than a traditional twin fin.
• Compared to a twin fin, a twinzer feels more "locked in" and allows for harder turns, responding more the harder you push on it.
• This makes it a good middle ground for those used to high-performance shortboards who still want immediate down-the-line speed.
Versatility in Quivers: Twinzers are versatile and can be found on a wide range of board sizes, from short to long, fitting almost anywhere in a quiver where a high-performance feel with immediate speed is desired.
