Axis High Modulus Carbon Integrated Foil Drive Mast

Shop carbon and aluminum hydrofoil masts from Armstrong, AXIS, F-One, Slingshot and more. Match your foil system first, then compare mast length and construction for your riding level, local water depth and conditions.

Building or upgrading your setup? Explore all foils, find compatible fuselages, front wings and tail wings, and check the included parts before adding hardware and tools.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I choose the right hydrofoil mast length?

Start with where you ride and how comfortable you are on foil. A shorter mast keeps you closer to the water and is generally easier to learn on. A longer mast gives you more clearance through chop, waves and bumps before the foil breaches, but adds leverage and can be harder to control.

Choose for your usual water depth and conditions, rather than buying the longest mast available. Our foil anatomy guide explains the tradeoffs, and our mast and fuselage length videos walk through the options.

What mast length should I start with for surf foiling?

For beginner surf foiling, we generally start shorter to limit ride height and reduce the chance of hitting the bottom. In our surf foiling progression guide, our coach uses Armstrong masts of 600, 655 or 725mm with beginner setups. Those are examples for that setup, rather than one size that fits every rider or spot.

As you progress, the same guide moves toward 725–795mm, depending on depth. If you also plan to wing or kite foil, tell us how and where you ride so we can help you choose a useful starting length.

Should I buy a carbon or aluminum foil mast?

Aluminum is a good place to start when you want a capable setup at a lower cost. Carbon generally costs more, with potential gains in weight, glide and response. The mast design and carbon layup matter, so compare the actual models rather than assuming every carbon mast is lighter or stiffer than every aluminum mast.

For example, the Slingshot One-Lock Aluminum Mast is the entry point to that system, while its Carbon and HM Carbon options focus on added stiffness and performance. Our carbon versus aluminum guide covers the broader construction tradeoffs.

Will a new foil mast fit my existing board and foil?

Check both ends of the mast: the board mount at the top and the foil connection at the bottom. A board mount that fits does not establish compatibility with your fuselage or front wing. Match the exact system and generation, including any required plate, bracket or adapter.

For example, our model data identifies Armstrong A+ Carbon and F-One TITAN 2 as specific foil systems. Before changing brands or upgrading an older setup, send us the model names of your board, mast and foil. We can help you check the connections and the parts needed to complete the setup.

Can I use an F-One TITAN 2 mast with my older F-One foil?

No. The TITAN 2 mast-to-foil connection is not backward compatible with the older TITAN system. Our current T2 mast listings specifically exclude compatibility with 2025 and older F-One foils and masts. Look for “(T2)” in the model name and verify the connection before ordering.

Our F-One UHM Carbon 12mm Mast (T2) review explains the change on video. If you are upgrading an older setup, check the complete parts list with us so you do not end up with a new mast that cannot connect to your foil.

What do HM and UHM mean, and how much does mast stiffness matter?

HM means high modulus carbon; UHM means ultra-high modulus carbon. These materials let designers tune stiffness and create thinner mast profiles. But the label alone does not tell you how the whole mast will ride. Profile, length and layup all matter, and resistance to bending is different from resistance to twisting.

Our F-One 12mm UHM review is a useful example: the 12mm design emphasizes glide, while heavier riders may prefer the 14mm UHM for added rigidity. The comparison chart on those pages separates bending stiffness, torsional stiffness and glide so you can compare the tradeoffs.

Which Armstrong carbon mast should I choose: MKII, Performance MKII or Performance-X?

The Carbon MKII is the accessible, forgiving option for building confidence and stepping into carbon. The Performance MKII is the all-around performance choice for riders who are already comfortable on foil and want a direct, controlled feel.

The Performance-X puts more emphasis on glide and quicker direction changes with its thinner, narrower profile. It is a more specialized choice for riders prioritizing efficiency and response. Watch our Armstrong carbon mast comparison with Armie Armstrong to see how the three designs differ.

Does a foil mast come with the mounting plate, bolts and adapters?

It depends on the model. Check the package contents before ordering, especially when buying a replacement mast rather than a complete foil.

The Armstrong Alloy System Mast includes the mast and cover; its top plate, bottom bracket and hardware are separate. By comparison, the Slingshot One-Lock Aluminum Mast includes a cover and RTS mounting kit, and the Armstrong Performance MKII lists mounting and assembly hardware. Use the specific product’s package list, then add any required foil hardware.

Is the Slingshot One-Lock mast completely tool-free?

Once it is set up, One-Lock makes routine assembly and breakdown much quicker. The foil components use a locking mechanism, and the RTS board mount lets you remove and reinstall the mast at your chosen position without tools.

You still need to install and tighten the board-mount hardware initially, and tools are needed if you want to change that setup. Our One-Lock setup videos show both the initial installation and the quick-release assembly, so you can see exactly what is involved.

What is an integrated Foil Drive mast, and what else do I need?

An integrated mast routes the motor cable inside the mast for a cleaner setup. It is a purpose-built mast, rather than a standard mast with a motor strapped on. You still need the compatible Foil Drive unit, motor and other components to complete the system.

The Armstrong 795mm integrated mast offers foil-assist and e-foil configurations with different motor positions. Choose the configuration for how you plan to ride and check the exact package contents. Our integrated mast assembly video shows the parts, cable adjustment and installation steps.
