From Armstrong

The Performance Mast range is a clean-sheet design that takes the Armstrong feeling riders know and love to new heights. Sophisticated engineering and top shelf Toray high modulus carbon give these masts a unique combination of efficiency, stiffness and control at speed.

Collaborating with a team of America’s Cup foil engineers, we set out to develop a high performance mast to take us into the future. Our design goal called for a unique blend of strength, stiffness, drag and light weight. Combining CFD analysis with expert insight allowed us to tune each section of the mast from baseplate to fuselage connection for maximum efficiency.

Structural analysis shows that a combination of both high modulus (HM) and intermediate modulus (IM) carbon fibers best distributes loads throughout various sections of the mast. HM's stiffness minimizes flex in the mast's central strut area and IM's high tensile strength caters to the complex shapes of the top plate and fuselage connection.

The result is a top of the line mast consisting of top shelf materials, new mast section, refined baseplate, reduced drag fuselage connection and new construction method. New proprietary titanium M7 mast top hardware follows suit with a strong and lightweight connection to the board.

These masts are designed with a mast rake angle. This fine tunes the board angle relative to the foil for a more comfortable and forgiving ride. It does not change the lifting force or balance of the foil itself, and it does not impact the foil’s “foot pressure” bias front or back. Board rocker also directly determines effective mast rake – boards from different brands have a variety of different rocker lines which influence rake angle – and more rocker in the rear half of board effectively increases mast rake. The 1 degree of rake we’ve placed specifically into the top of the Performance Mast shape provides three main benefits by adjusting the board relative to the foil underwater:

Features
  • By bringing the foil closer to 0 degrees when the board is in the water, drag is reduced which makes takeoffs easier.
  • Touching down at speed or landing a jump is more forgiving and there’s less chance of crashing headfirst over the board.
  • By lifting the board nose slightly (1 degree = 17.46mm/m), mast rake makes it easier to ride fast without catching the nose at steep riding angles.
Mast Weights
  • 795: 3.9 lbs (1.76 kg)
  • 935: 4.7 lbs (2.13 kg)
  • 1035: 5.5 lbs (2.49 kg)

Worth every penny

The mast is better in every way. Smooth coming out of the water, I feel so connected to the foils it is hard to verbalize, faster (yes longer and faster), extra range, and it promotes getting into the flow of foiling. One of the biggest upgrades we have done in four boards and six foils.

The first time on this mast I was having my best session in 2-1/2 years. Thanks Arnie it is “Mind blowing” section, and of course high modulus carbon is needed for how thin it is.

Board 2024 FG - 105 ltr, 60 fuse, 1200 & 1600 CF, Flow 235. This is one dialed kit. Now I have to start stepping up my game.

Huge upgrade! It's section not the stiffness

I'm a retired guy that is your average rider. I thought I wouldn't appreciate the performance upgrade or the stiffness. I was blown away how much better the performance mast is. I am not making all my turns and it works equally as well on small foils as large foils. I get on foil faster, go upwind better, am in way more control and having more fun foiling from this performance mast.

Huge upgrade

Its pretty shocking what a difference this performance mast actually makes. I got the 795 right when it came out, and then later on got the 865 mast when that released and have been using them both a ton. Overall the new performance mast is SUCH a good upgrade. I don't know what sort of magic they unlocked, but the mast is stiffer and faster. The thing I've noticed most is that it feels like it has less drag, so it glides better and I find I can pump farther. For prone surf foiling, that drag reduction is super noticeable. For winging you feel that difference, but I think the stiffness of the new mast makes the bigger difference for winging. One thing for sure, is that the new masts improve the bigger wings massively!!! I use to only use my HA1125 for prone surf foiling and really didn't like it too much for winging due to the flex I felt. I also have the HA1325 but never use it at all because you get so much flex in the system with it. I've winged both HA1125 and HA1325 on the 865 performance mast, and its a total night and day difference. Both wings work great and are super fun on this mast.

795 Size seems like it could be a good mast for someone looking to use it for both prone and wing foiling. I find prone foiling in small waves its feels a bit too long, so still the 725 will be best for most people prone surf foiling I think. This size is good for wing though.

865 is perfect for wing foiling. Definitely glad I got this size for wing!

First prone surf session on the 795 performance mast

Just had my first prone session on the 795 Mast with 925/50F/195(blueshim). Started at setting 4, then moved up to 5. Probably could have gone to 5.5 or 6. (4'5 FG board).

Waves were waist high and clean. I'm an average prone foiler...would be better if I didn't wing all the dang time haha! What I immediately noticed was the difference was more noticeable than winging with the new mast. It just feels like a completely different rig. The reduction in drag surrounding the mast just frees up everything a bunch. The V1 mast's drag created a sort of stability(drag factor) that just isn't present with the new mast, so movement in all axis feels more free, and a bit challenging with 50 fuse after first few waves, but I was getting 2-1s no problem.

I was able to basically stall out the pump on the way back out, touching down, then get it back up to speed (dealing with poor mast placement at first). On the 72 mast, as soon as I got low or slowed near stalling speed, there was no way I could get it back up and moving with the 925. It was only an hour session and the majority of time was wasted on poor mast placement, but I can tell you this mast shakes everything up and will require a bit of dialing in compared to your current setup. No question the pump is really good and I'm looking forward to more sessions on it.

935 mast is FIRE!

I love how you can lean into this mast with total control and confidence. The mast doesn't ventilate or breach as I have had other masts do. It is really nice for foiling on bigger sections and open faced turns. I am still adjusting to the length so not as comfortable with quicker snap turns. Overall love the speed and control of the new Armstrong Performance Mast.
