Kite Lesson FAQs
Quick answers before you book.
Do I need lessons?
Yes. Kiteboarding is a technical sport and kites have a lot of power. Lessons help you learn to control the kite safely and dramatically speed up your progression. Even experienced riders take lessons to improve transitions, boosting, ocean riding, or foiling.
How long does it take to learn?
We suggest planning for at least 3 days to become self-sufficient and practice safely on your own. With continued coaching, riders often stay upwind in about 10 days and begin jumping around 20 days. The more time on the water, the faster you progress.
What should I bring?
Students are required to have their own water wear, including booties, sunscreen, and a swimsuit or wetsuit depending on the season. All kiteboarding gear needed for the lesson is included. The REAL Flagship Store is stocked with water wear, and students receive 10% off regularly priced water wear while participating in lessons.
What if there is no wind?
If there is no wind at the time of your lesson, we ask that you come to the Lesson Center to meet your coach and make a plan for the day. Your coach will work with you to reschedule to the next available time slot. In Cape Hatteras, wind is rarely far away.
Private Lessons or Zero to Hero Camp?
Private and Semi-Private Lessons allow you to customize your curriculum and book starting any day of the week. The Zero to Hero Camp runs three consecutive days and follows a structured curriculum designed to take beginners to self-sufficiency. Contact a REAL Pro at (252) 987-6000 to determine which option fits you best.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
Lessons and camps may be rescheduled up to 14 days before the scheduled start time with no rescheduling fee. Changes made within 14 days may incur a rescheduling fee. If a lesson or camp is canceled by REAL, you will receive a REAL Credit equivalent to the value booked.
