Lib Tech has been offering a variety of boards in their revolutionary super durable MBC construction. Lib Tech has traditionally focused on shortboard and hybrid shapes. The Pickup Stick is the first board Lib has put out in the mid size range. If you want to shred and only have room to bring one board to the beach, this is the board to load in your truck.
• Narrowed longboard nose outline
• Refined but forgiving rails
• Outline with pronounced hip near tail
• Single to double concave to flat off the tail
• Lib Tech MBC Construction
• Round pin 5-fin tail – Run it as a quad or thruster
What We Like:
This board surfs well in a wide variety of wave sizes and conditions.
We surfed it in small, knee to waist high beach break and medium sized chunky jetty waves. The board was fast and lively in mini reeling barrels with hard offshore winds. These are conditions that have the potential to be difficult and frustrating on the wrong equipment, The Pickup Stick turned it into a fun session full of head dip barrels and quick pocket hooks.
It features a pulled in longboard nose which reduces swing weight making for tight, snappy turning and easy duck diving. It has a hard almost square edge in the tail that held in the face of the wave and made for smooth, stable takeoffs.
The outline of the board has a hip in the back half that flows into a pulled in round pin tail that allows for tight arcing turns.
Day one, session one, Pickup Stick
We rode the Pickup Stick as a quad with the stock plastic fins that Lib Tech provided. The fins had good drive with no weird chatter. Takeoffs were smooth and there were no hangups or slow downs as the board rolled onto the rail.
During late, steep drops the rails locked into the face of the wave and the single to double concave provided smooth even lift for down the line speed.
This board surfs like a 7’0” shortboard so don't expect it to glide like a mini-mal or a traditional mid-length. It's made to surf in the pocket and be turned.
If you are looking for a board to learn on we would recommend The Pickup Stick for small to medium size surfers weighing no more than 160 pounds.
For someone stepping down from a longboard or looking for a board to fit in the quiver between their shortboard and their longboard it has the volume and paddle power to accommodate a much bigger surfer.
Why You Want This Board:
You're looking for a versatile board to put in your quiver that you will be able to shred and have fun on in most conditions. It is also a good choice if you're a small to medium size surfer that wants a durable board to learn on that will also grow with you as you become a better surfer. This board does exactly what it is supposed to: It makes fun sessions possible no matter the conditions and eliminates the headache of bringing a whole quiver to the beach.
