What we like:
What's not to love? Slingshot has taken all of our favorite control bar features and combined them into one functional, easy to use bar. 99% of kiteboarders will prefer the simple above the bar depower system that allows you to use your full body leverage when depowering, without cluttering up your view with a bunch of odd straps and buckles. Kiteboarders will also love the moveable trim block, which allows you to move the block up and down like an active stopper, adjusting the amount of throw in the bar. Kiteboarding coaches in the REAL Lesson Center especially love this feature for teaching, so they can customize the bar to work perfectly with different body types.
Things just keep getting better below the bar where you will find the 2nd swivel, making it easy to manually unspin your center lines even while you are up and riding. The namesake Sentinel Quick Release System is reliable and easy to operate, and is one of the easiest bars on the market to re-assemble after you've popped the safety release off.
Even though it's a small part, we also like Slingshot's redesigned carabiner on their kite leash. It's stronger and the design is sleeker than previous years, proving once again that attention to detail is key when designing kiteboarding gear.
Slingshot says they have softened the bar ends on this new bar design, but they are still fairly hard so do not expect them to be as plush as some other padded bars on the market. The EVA grip on the bar is also very durable and hard, so it may take a few sessions for your hands to get used to the built-out grip on the bar.
Long-time Slingshot fans will be stoked to see the new Sentinel Bar has elastic line keepers on the bar ends, but the elastics fit the bar very tightly and it can be a struggle to get them into place.
Why you want this bar:
If you fly a 4-line kite, you want this bar. The combination of moveable trim block, above the bar clam-cleat depower, and below the bar swivel make for the perfect control bar that answers some of the most common complaints about bar design. Like all Slingshot products, the bar is built tough and designed to take a beating in the toughest kiteboarding conditions.
The Compstick with Sentinel Safety has an above-the-bar depower system, adjustable bar throw, and a new below-the-bar swivel.
