The REAL Deal

The Pyzel Nugget looks similar to a lot of well rounded hybrid designs out there, but has some special traits that you discover after surfing it. While the round tail may indicate this board is for better surf, it also works well down to almost full on grovel conditions, making it a versatile workhorse that racks up high wave count every session.

Pyzel Nugget Tech Specs:
• Wider/thicker nose
• Overall flatter rocker
• Generous width
• Single to recessed double concave
• 5-fin setup

What We Like

If you want to travel with one trusty hybrid to cover a really wide range of conditions, the Pyzel Nugget is one of the boards you need to check out. This board focuses on surf from "just above miserable" to "just about excellent", meaning you can ride just about everything with it. Sure, boards like the Pyzel Rat Skull will work a touch better in total junk, and the Pyzel Short Cut will work better in head high barrels, but the Nugget will hold its own in both and keep decisions and your board budget to a minimum.

We got to ride our Nuggets in a wide range of surf from really soft thigh high point waves, to head high thumpy beach break that had good push. The Nugget paddles and catches waves easily. Right off the drop, this board has great speed, with good drive and a carvey feel. It can also snap a tight turn in the pocket and likes to roll off the roundtail in and out of the turns, making it fun for high-speed roundhouses. We got to use the board both as a thruster and a quad setup. Both worked well, so you can use either your personal preference or the type of waves you are surfing to dictate your fin set up. Two of our favorite fin sets for this board were the FuturesRoberts Generation Series (both tri and quad) as well as the Futures Jordy Tris when the surf was better and we didn’t need as much added speed from the fins. The Pyzel Nugget covers a massive range of surf conditions and really shines from thigh high up to 1’ft overhead surf.

Insider Info

With so many boards in this category, we thought it would be helpful for a quick breakdown of the differences compared to other boards in this category:

• Compared to the Pyzel Rat Skull, the Nugget has a bit more rocker, less tail area, and it generally narrower throughout.
• Compared to the Pyzel Short Cut, the Nugget has a wider/flatter tail, with a slightly fuller rail.
• Compared to the …Lost Mini Driver, the Nugget has more low end as a one board quiver, but will feel a touch flat and overpowered on the top end in heavy surf compared to the Mini Driver.

This Nugget is a “flatter” rockered board, but not completely flat like some of the extreme boards in this category. It seems to have all the right curves in the right places to make the most fun out of the most conditions. If you surf hybrids a lot, you’ll feel right at home on the Nugget on your very first wave.

The Nugget is also the perfect step down board for the Pyzel Short Cut, so if you’re looking for a solid 2 board quiver to cover almost anything the ocean throws at you, these two make a magic pairing.

Why You Want This Board

You’re looking for a hybrid that will cover the most “real world” surf range. The Pyzel Nugget puts a serious dose of fun and performance into a single board quiver.
