Cape Hatteras, NC is known around the world as one of the best surfing locations in North America. Located on the border between the North and South Atlantic Oceans, Cape Hatteras receives both north and south swells. The boomerang shape of the island allows surfers to find offshore winds in almost any wind direction by shifting up and down the coastline. This geographic shape opens up the swell window ranging from SW wind swells on the southside of the island counter clockwise thru more powerful ground swells from the S, SE, E, NE and N, all hitting the "OBX". Depending on your tastes, ability level, or swell size, this also allows surfers to find smaller or larger waves by simply shifting north or south.

Cape Hatteras receives great waves year round with 4 months of trunkable warm water June-September. The best thing about Cape Hatteras is that over half of the US population can drive there in under a day, making it the number #1 road trip destination. The thickest suit you'll need in the dead of winter is a 4/3 fullsuit, although some of the locals whose blood has thinned use 5/3mm in the same conditions. The rest of the year a 3mm full is all you need. Locals look towards strong NE swells post coastal nor'easter blows, as well as winter northerly groundswells and summer tropical SE groundswells. As we write this we just received great waves from Hurricane Bill and Danny! While there are a few piers, jetties and sand points that produce semi-predictable "point breaks", most of the waves in Cape Hatteras are beach breaks and can get very hollow with size. 4wd access allows surfers to explore the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and find their own private break.
