The new White Diamond 2 from Roberts is a high performance hybrid design with a strong focus on smaller waves up to head high. This board has quite a bit of horsepower under the hood with fast acceleration thanks to the wider diamond tail. The original White Diamond is the board the won Roberts Surfing Magazine “Shaper of the Year” Award, so following in those footsteps isn’t an easy thing to do. The new White Diamond 2 (WD2) improves on the OGWD with faster/quicker turns and better release off the top.
White Diamond 2 Tech Specs:
• Single to Double Concave Bottom
• Signature Roberts flipped nose design with rolled entry
• Rounded Diamond Tail with 5-fin set up. Works both as a tri/quad.
*Available in PU/Poly or Hydroflex Natural constructions
*All Roberts boards now come with volume specs
What we like:
Compared to original White Diamond, the new White Diamond 2 has a slightly narrower/thinner nose and also a double concave bottom out the back. This results is less swing weight up front during turns and a noticeably quicker turn in snaps off the top. The double concave does two things : It’s way faster off the top if your foot isn’t all the way on the back of the pad, and it also lengthens the sweet spot where your back foot can be and still have the board turn well. Even if your foot is all the way back against the ramp of your tailpad, you will still find the WD2 more reactive and snappier when compared to the original White Diamond.
This board gets compared a lot to other hybrids but it actually has a much higher performance feel with faster acceleration and better turning. The best way to think of it, is as a high performance shortboard that is VERY easy to surf with a 700hp engine in it. Mega power on demand, super fast and very lively when you want to throw down some turns and airs. This is why you see a lot of people getting one of these boards to position as a step down board to their high performance shortboard. It’s a great grovel board too if you have the skills to get on the tail and make it happen. TONS of acceleration and speed!
Last but not least, Roberts is now listing the volumes of all their boards. This makes it incredibly easy to see which size WD2 is right for you based on your height, weight and volume preference.
What we don’t like:
Whenever you release a new board, especially a sequel, most expect the original to fade away. The original White Diamond still has it’s place as it’s a bit easier to paddle and more forgiving to having your front foot too far forward thanks to the extra foam up there. Because the WD2 isn’t made by CI or …Lost, it flies under the radar a bit. Once someone tries one they’re usually a convert for life, since the WD2 is so unique compared to most other hybrids.
Why you want the White Diamond 2:
This board makes an incredible step down board to anyone riding a high performance shortboard. It’s also one of the highest performance hybrids on the market when it comes to waves under head high.
With feedback from the last three years, we decided on some subtle changes to make our White Diamond even better. We thinned the nose slightly and narrowed it just a tiny bit. We added double concave out the back with a tiny bit of vee. We also rounded the corners on the diamond. The WD2 is sized like the original WD at 5-to-6 inches shorter and an inch wider than your shortboard.
The rocker is low in the tail for speed and slightly flipped in the last 8 inches of the nose to allow vertical maneuvers in the pocket.
Medium to Full for stability with tucked hard edges for speed and holding power
Tri fin is standard. Also works well as a quad. Five fin convertible is a great option.
Single to double concave with a slight V for a blend of speed and release off the top.
6 inches to one to two feet over head
