The 3rd annual BEST Kiteboarding SuperFly Open was held this past weekend at Powder Mountain, in Eden, Utah. The event ran from Friday, March 11th through Sunday, March 14th pulling in snowkiters from all over the US as well as Canada, Austria, and even Aruba.
Friday, the first day of the event, started off with ultra light winds and beautiful clear blue Utah skies. Many of the competitors spent the morning riding the great lift accessed terrain and fun park at Powder Mountain waiting for the wind to fill in. Late in the afternoon the wind came up a bit and a few of the races were run. REAL and Liquid Force team rider Brandon Scheid along with fellow Liquid Force team rider Craig Cunningham made a solid first impression on the Superfly Open judges by throwing down off of the kickers in the light winds. The wind backed out at the event site, but some diehard snowkiters rode adjacent to the Powder Mountain upper parking lot well into the darkness.
Saturday, day 2 of the event, started clear and windy (around 30+ mph) at sunrise. However by 9am the clouds had moved in bringing shifty winds and driving snow. With poor visibility and a forecast for "thunder snow" in the afternoon, event organizers held off until noon and then made the call to postpone the event, pushing all remaining events until Sunday. A few brave kiters sessioned during the storm even with visibility so poor that at times the rider could not see his/her kite while it was flying!! A large group of the SuperFly participants, along with a few of the organizers, took the opportunity during the white out blizzard conditions to warm up for the freestyle/rail portion of the event by running laps in the park and even managed to search out some powder stashes in the numerous tree runs available at Pow Mow. By the end of the day the visibility was worsening but the snow showed no sign of letting up!
The final day of the 2010 SuperFly Open began with even worse visibility than the day before. Luckily the snow had stopped and the system was forecasted to push out by midday. Almost like clockwork at 12 noon the clouds pushed out and the clearing winds began to fill in opening up an amazing view of the valleys and mountain ranges for miles around. Riders hit the snow, kites filled the sky, and all of the events were completed (race, big air, freestyle, & rails). At the end of the day the 1st place Mens Pro 2010 Freestyle Title went to Brandon Scheid (REAL, Liquid Force, O’Neill, Dragon) while fellow LF team member Craig Cunningham (Liquid Force, Rip Curl, Von Zipper) took home 2nd place and 3rd was captured by Craig’s good friend Sam Medesky (Best, O’Neill). Sam also took 1st place in the rail event with Brandon a close 2nd, and Jake Buzianis (Best) snapping up 3rd.
Although conditions varied greatly, all of the riders had an amazing time, and the organizers and sponsors of the 2010 SuperFly Open put on a solid event. Check out www.superflyopen.com for more information of the event and the sponsors.
