What do you get when you combine a 500-competitor surf contest, with a new and upcoming surf apparel brand, REAL, a live band and a 175-pound pig?
Well you’re probably not the only one to be scratching your head right now, but what the above ingredients produced was one of the best and biggest parties ever held at REAL!
Over 600 surfers, parents, ESA staff and spectators packed the party to enjoy a night of live music by NY band “My Friend Ben”, an authentic NC BBQ with pig and chicken prepared by MOJOs Sunset Cafe, $$thousands of dollars worth of Ergo prizes, dancing, plus a world class sunset over the Pamlico Sound.
In attendance was legendary shaping legend Pat Rawson of Rawson Surfboards, who even got up on stage with fellow surfer Steve “Rocky” Magliano (Pat on keyboards and Rocky on harmonica) to jam with the band.
After the band’s second set, the surf film “PATIENCE” was shown for the crowd atop the stage on a 10ft screen with pumping sound. Directly following that, the Ergo crew mounted the VIP deck and proceeded to throw boxes, upon boxes of free Ergo T’s, hats, hoodies, jeans, etc into the crowd. It was raining, no pouring product for over 10 minutes straight!
This party was made possible by the generous sponsorships of Outer Beaches Realty who sponsored the band, and also by John Wayne Cancer Foundation, who covered the cost of feeding over 400 surfers and their families, plus the ESA staff. Outer Beaches Realty VP Scott Legatt and Marketing Director Jen Mayo were both on hand to help with the party and John Wayne Cancer Foundation representative Ethan Wayne, sent his regards by email:
“We’re excited to be a part of such a great organization as the ESA. We took the opportunity to sponsor this party because we wanted to get our message out to the young surfers. Surfers and their families need to protect themselves from the sun with sunscreen, hats, rashguards, and smart measures like staying out of the sun mid day, as most damage is done by the age of 18 years old. Our strategy is not to scare young surfers, but to educate them on how to protect themselves.”
Since staying out the sun entirely isn’t an option during the Easterns, JWCF also donated 1,500 packets of JWCF SPF 45 waterproof sunscreen, as well as two boxes of co-branded JWCF/Xcel high quality rashguards.
REAL Watersport’s Trip Forman had this to say about the Ergo ESA Party:
“We wanted to THANK the ESA for bringing this event to Cape Hatteras and the best way to do this was by showing some genuine NC hospitality! “My Friend Ben” rocked the house. They were unbelievable. The song that Rawson and Rocky played in on was a foot stomping “solo-fest”. That one is going down in the history books, you’ll hear about it on some sand dune 50 years from now…Also THANKS to Ergo for starting the fire and to Gatorade for quenching our thirst all night! The achievement award has to go to Steve Myers and the crew at MOJOs Sunset Café for feeding over 600 people throughout the night. The crowd went from a manageable 40-50, to over 500 in under 30 minutes! With the help of a few extra hardworking volunteers, MOJOs fed the masses with the best food of the week and was appreciated by everyone at the party. Thanks to all the ESA surfers, families and staff for making the trip north to the party. We look forward to hosting the event again next year.”
