Description

The 2013 Slingshot Rally is a beginner to intermediate kite that creates steady pull and is very easy to use.
The new and improved Rally is completely redesigned. The main improvements are the addition of wind tip struts to make this kite a 5 strut design and a new all aluminum chicken loop insert on the bar. You will find the 2013 Rally to have the bomber construction and ease of use characteristics that you have come to expect from Slingshot.

What we like:
From the first time you put the Rally in the air, it feels solid. The addition of the two struts to this swept wing tip design really cleaned up the wing tip pinching problem that the earlier Rally models had. The 2013 Rally is really stable over head, rides upwind easily, and it has consistent pull. The relaunch is better than most of the kites in the Slingshot line up. They changed to colors on the bar to make it look cooler, and the full aluminum chicken loop insert looks super clean and reduces the wear and tear on the chicken loop line.

What we don't like:
By turning this kite into a 5 strut design you lose some of the snappiness that the earlier models had. More struts equals more weight. It is better to have the extra struts and not have the wing tip pinch, but you do sacrifice a touch of turning speed and that really light weight feeling. The only other things we wished they had changed were the grip on the bar and the unnecessary knot options on the pigtails. The grip is pretty aggressive and could chew up the hands of your average office jockey.

Why you want the 2013 Rally:
The Rally is a sweet kite. It will work best for the beginner to intermediate rider that want a no hassle kiteboarding experience. The kite relaunches well, has a smooth pull, jumps well, and pretty much does everything you want to have out of your kite. You will even see a bunch of kiters praising this kite for the waves since it drifts down the line well has a steady pull for strapless kiting.

REALPro Tip: Rig the Rally with the middle knot on the leading edge and the knot all the way away from kite on the trailing edge. The Rally likes to be pumped up up hard too.

Customer Reviews

  1. versatile kite with good upwind

by Stellato - REAL Lesson Center on October 8, 2012

    Size tested: 12M
    Rider 175lbs
    Conditions: 15-22mph side-on, 3-4ft surf, heavy current

Wanted to test this kite for a great ocean session. Solid low-end power, the kite wants to fly fast at a good angle into the wind and will keep you up on plane through all the foam and whitewater on the inside.

Sits in a nice position in the wind window that is good for waveriding. Relaunch is fantastic and really love the new direct connection for the rear lines.

2 reasons why this kite did not get 5-stars: This kite has 5 struts and a huge leading edge. It's a beast to pump up and the extra struts build in some extra weight. Also the kite had decent drift but there are a few other kites at REAL that drift even better.
  2. Nice Beginner Kite

by Ryan Osmond REAL Coach on September 12, 2012

When the kite is powered in the correct wind range it is really simple to relaunch. It has plenty of depower too and a nice low end. The big range makes it great for beginners that are going to have fewer kites.

The two extra struts help the kite retain its shape and not warp out. I think that this adds to the improved low end.

My only complaint is that I have had is that one of the zipper came apart and one other Rally had the bladder not installed right from the factory. This is pretty rare for Slingshot products and they warrantied both kites right away.

I would recommend it for beginners any day of the week. I like riding it since it unhooks well. The RPM slacks for wake tricks better, but the Rally is more user friendly and better suited for most kitesurfers.
  3. Good Times for 2013

by Tube (Toby Diggens) on August 19, 2012

Slingshot opens up the 2013 account with a banger! The new Rally is a freeride and wave kite that will suit a wide range of people and make every session a joy.

    REASONS:
    1) The Relaunch is insane!! It literally comes off the water without any input. For two reasons this is a massive plus. For beginners looking for the simplest most effective relaunch and peace of mind, look no further. Plus for wave riders who want confidence out in the ocean, this kite will allow them to push the boundaries every session with the ally of great relaunch at their side.

    2) The kite has definitely improved from last year with the extra wingtip rigidity. It does make the kite a little slower and after riding 2012/2013 B2B I could definitely feel extra grunt and slightly slower turning. This I really liked and the kite feels solid and smooth.

    OVERALL:
A great kite with added benefits that I think distinguish it from others on the market nicely. This kite will suit two sets of people. 1) Beginners and Intermediate freeriders who want simplicity and realiability in all conditions.............. THAT RELAUNCH. 2) Wave riders who want a kite with consistent pull and very responsive turning and again......... THAT RELAUNCH! Will be a big hit this coming year.

Tubes Tuning Tip - Pump the kite rock solid to feel the true advantages of the new 5 strut design!
  4. 2013 Slingshot Rally

by Chris Hutchison on August 11, 2012

I was pretty impressed with this year's rally. The addition of two more struts has added a noticeable amount of stability to the kite. I rode the 9m with a 20 inch bar and was impressed with the ease of relaunch and fast turning speeds. The kite was super lofty giving me tons of hang time. The 2013 rally also still has a lot of depower which is always a plus. I can't wait to try some of the other sizes and really put them to the test!
  5. A couple minor things that prevent this being a 5* kite.

by Chris Lazinski on August 7, 2012

You can tell that the trailing edge shape is different - this kite feels more like an RPM this year. It relaunches well but it should relaunch better considering its shape and profile.

Bad: If the kite rolls onto the trailing edge it is hard to relaunch. I only experienced this on lessons though and had no problems when taking personal sessions.

Good: I like how it feels. The power delivery isn't on-off, its a much smoother pull and it really does feel like an RPM. It has some real teeth to it on the low end too.

Overall, I'm stoked on it. I didn't like the first year Rally, I was lukewarm on the 2012 version and I really like the new 2013 version. This kite will make its way into my coaching rotation for sure.
  6. Rally 2012 Review

by Pete Hardie on August 6, 2012

    Conditions: 15-20mph with a 12m 2013 Rally and 2013 Slingshot Celeritas - flat water. Rider weight: 180lbs.

This kite is marginally slower than last year's Rally but more stable and grunty. I felt really powered in 15-20mph and didn't have to work the kite at all.
I also found that it felt really stable when at 12 o clock and i couldn't outrun it even if I tried.

Finally the relaunch is ridiculous - almost fully automatic. I'm yet to fly the smaller versions but I'm really impressed with the 12m.
  7. Nice 5 Strut Design

by Matt Nuzzo on August 3, 2012

SOLID is the first word that comes to mind with the 2013 Rally. By adding two struts on the wing tip, this kite became a lot more stable and solid. It lost some of the turning speed, but I like the clean turn and stability over the 2012 Rally.

With the swept back wing tip the Rally has an easy relaunch and I was surprised with how smooth the power output was from this style of kite.

I have tested this kite with beginners, big guys and in the flat water and surf. It is clean simple and it works well. The quality is top notch and I think that most people that get the Rally 2013 are going to be loving their sessions.
