The Taboo was created using ‘Ride Optimized Geometry’ concept where each aspect of the 3D design, material selection and construction techniques were made with the sole intent of creating the most perfect high performance kite in each size based on its intended riding style.

Though each size of the Taboo is unique there are design trends across the sizes in the range that define the limits of their performance. Some of these choices are illustrated below.

Modified materials usage:
Materials usage in every Taboo is adjusted according to the intended use of the kite. Dacron placement is modified across the trailing edge and wingtip area to give the smaller kites even better crash resistance than Canopy Framing can provide and to help ensure that they can survive even a prolonged rinse in overhead waves.

Dacron use in the largest size Taboos is optimized to give the perfect blend of reduced kite weight to enhance lightwind performance while still ensuring that the wingtips are stiff enough to deliver the steering response and handling required by competitive course racers.

Modified strut layout for targeted performance:
The Taboo range uses four, five, and six strut canopy layouts to modify performance for specific riding styles. The 4m and 5.5m kites use a quad strut layout. The quad strut layout is the optimal combination between reducing drag and providing stability in even the roughest wind conditions.

The 7-14m Taboo kites use a six strut layout which provides maximum support to all areas of the canopy for maximum efficiency. For light wind and course racing the 15m and 17m kites are designed to be as efficient as possible. They use a five strut layout to support their larger canopy area but the fifth strut in the center of the canopy is a small diameter high pressure strut, separate from the EZ-pump system. This provides maximum canopy support while minimizing drag and kite weight.

Wingtip design and center of effort placement:
Placing the center of effort deeper in the canopy of the smallest size Taboo models helps to maximize unhooked performance. Creating a wider wingtip area and moving the front bridle tow points backwards gives maximum steering responsiveness for faster turning and lighter bar feel.

Aggressive canopy profiling and tip-to-tip shaping:
Careful LE span shaping and canopy profiling in the medium, 10-14m, Taboo sizes increases turning ability while retaining all the stability and unhooked control of the smaller sizes. Improved power delivery and maneuverability in the medium sizes makes them kiteloop machines that retain their pull all the way through any loop making them a great choice for new school riders.

Swept wingtips and increased projected area:
The 15m and 17m Taboos have a more pronounced backwards sweep to their wingtips compared to the small and medium sizes; this helps decrease drag during flight and enhances the ability of the kite to roll onto the wingtip area, facilitating a faster and an easier relaunch, even in lightwind conditions.

Lightwind riding and course racing requires maximum efficiency from your kite, not just low end grunt. By increasing both aspect ratio and total projected canopy area compared to the smallest sizes the largest Taboos deliver both low end pull and maximum efficiency helping you ride and win when others can’t.

Cons: Construction is solid but not quite as plush as some of the others; Subtle stall in the turn when unhooked

The 2011 Best Taboo is the best kite that they have made since the 2007 Waroo. Remember the 2007 Waroo. That kite was light, fast, boosted, and relaunched. It really did everything well. For 2011 Best brought back a kite to their line that most kiteboarders will get on and be really stoked with. There marketing is over the top with a ton of sizes and a ton of tech. When you bake it down to how does the Taboo perform, the answer is great.

2011 Best Taboo Tech
The Taboo was designed as 3 different kites for light, medium, and high winds. For those different conditions, they ride and perform perfectly. The high wind kites are really solid built and feeling. The mid range kites are fast and responsive. The light wind kites are light weight and drag you upwind in nothing. The leading edge bridle on these kites are really simple with no pulleys. The trailing edge have multiple attachment points with multiple turning speed options. The multiple attachment points might be too much to deal with for the novice.

The construction of the kite is improved quality for Best. The one pump system has also been improved for easier bladder change and less chance of error. The quality has definitely improved, but it still is not quite up to what some of the other brands are putting out. The 2011 Taboos all come with a sick new Messenger Bag that is great quality and fits the kite easily.

How does the 2011 Taboo ride?
The Taboo is a great kite. I loved it the first time I rode it, and I have tested other sizes since then and every experience was positive. It feels very natural and does everything really well. It is not super grunty, but it does ride true to the size on the bag. Boosting this kite has really nice loft and landings are soft. Turning speed is quick, with steady pull through the turns. Unhooked it is really stable. When it was unhooked low in the window the kite stalled a touch but very minor. Wave riding... YES. Plenty fast with good power through turns. Overall the Taboo is a winner for Best. This kite has really reliable performance with a well rounded feel.

Who is the 2011 Best Taboo for?
Best is targeting the top end with the Taboo. At $1800 for a 12m Taboo, this will be the most expensive 12m that Best has made since the Hellfish(If you want a good laugh look into "The kite that changed kiteboarding history"). Is the Taboo worth it? YES. This kite is a great kite. You can put someone that just graduated from Zero to Hero on this kite and they will love it, or you can give it to someone that has been kiting for 10 years and they will love it. It is pretty quick turning, so I would not recommend the Taboo for the true novice that is only looking to park their kite and mow the lawn. If you are that person, then get yourself a Kahoona. Anyone else that is kiteboarding can buy the Taboo and never have second thoughts.
